6 Warning Signs You Should Be Updating Your Phone Software

Updating your Operating System (OS) is part of keeping your phone running at its best. The prospect can be a little scary: it can take a while to get used to any changes, and you run the risk of not liking the latest features. Still, it’s important to keep your Smartphone current so it can run safely and smoothly. Here are some signs (besides that red notification symbol in your Settings app) that it’s time to update your OS:

1. Your battery is draining quickly
Updating your phone’s OS gets rid of bugs and glitches that might be draining your battery. Installing the latest version means you’re up to date with the latest improvements and fixes.

2. Your OS has a security flaw
No OS is perfect, and hackers are always looking for ways to exploit vulnerabilities in mobile software. Whether an OS provider learns of a flaw internally or through a publicized attack, they typically issue a fix as quickly as possible. So even if you get a notification for what seems like a small update, when it comes to protecting your personal information, you should always upgrade.

3. Your phone is running slowly
Software updates aren’t always about new features. If you find your phone running at speeds that are less than ideal, it may be due to outdated software. Making sure your device has the latest performance-enhancing features could restore some of that “fresh out of the box” speed.

4. Your apps aren’t working
If you’ve installed the latest version of an app, only to find it’s suddenly ceased to function normally, it could be a sign that it’s time to update your OS. Many apps have new features that aren’t compatible with older OS versions, and some won’t run, period.

5. Your Wi-Fi is no longer working
Don’t get caught burning through your data when you don’t have to. Pay attention to whether your usual Wi-Fi networks are working and if your phone is staying consistently connected. If not, it may be time to hit that “Update” button.

6. You don’t see any of the new emoji
While keeping up with the latest emoji isn’t essential to your phone’s performance, you don’t want to be left out. If your friends and family are suddenly sending you emoji that show up as indecipherable symbols, it may be time to commit to an OS update.

Bonus: Newer OS versions are built to take advantage of new device features. So if you want the absolute latest and greatest, it may be time to upgrade your device. If you decide on new hardware for that new software, U.S. Cellular® has a complete selection of the latest devices.
