10 out of 10: Best Features of Android 10

Google’s newest version of its mobile operating system, Android 10, promises better security, easier multitasking and more expansive accessibility features. Here are the top 10 coolest things Android 10 has to offer:

1. Gesture Controls

Wave goodbye to the iconic back button. Android 10 features a fully gesture-based system of navigation. Swipe up to go home, swipe up and hold to access the multitasking menu or swipe from either edge of your screen to go back.

If you’re not ready to commit to gestures, don’t worry. Android 10 also allows you to switch back to Android Pie’s two-button system or the classic three-button array.

2. Improved Privacy

Android 10 is stepping up privacy controls. Now, apps that ask for your location will reveal a pop-up asking if you want to grant access all the time, only during use or not at all. You’ll also have more control over your apps’ access to photos, videos, audio and downloads.

3. Support for Foldable Screens

With foldable phones finally hitting the market, Android 10 is being optimized to support foldables of all sizes, including the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Fold.

4. Suggested actions in Smart Reply

With Android 10, you get more than just suggested responses to your messages. You also get recommended actions. That means if a friend asks you out to dinner, your phone can pull up directions right in Google Maps, no copy and paste required. Even better, it works in all your favorite messaging apps.

 5. Dark theme

Let there be dark. In response to popular demand, Google is finally introducing a system-wide dark graphic theme that you can toggle on or off at any time with the Quick Settings menu. They’ve also created a new software API that app developers can use to turn apps dark when the system-wide dark mode is on.

6. Support for 5G networks

Android 10 will enable apps to detect the strength of a user’s internet connection and how fast their download speeds are, so they know how much data to send. When 5G debuts, that will mean greater speed and functionality.

7. Live Caption

Android 10 now offers real-time captioning for any form of audio or video media, from movies to podcasts to video games and beyond, breaking down accessibility barriers for users who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. The best part? No internet connection required. Live Caption relies on the device’s own speech recognition program.

8. Focus mode

Android 10’s Digital Wellbeing is all about helping you unplug and find balance. That starts with Focus Mode, which silences distracting apps to help you get things done.

9. Family Link

Another piece of Digital Wellbeing is Family Link, which enables parents to set app-specific time limits, view and manage app activity and create healthy digital habits. Awarding your kids bonus screen time has never been easier.

10. Notification Controls

Android 10 makes it easy to customize your app notifications. When you swipe one away, you’ll be able to mark future notifications from that app to Silent or Alert. If you don’t like either option, turn off notifications altogether.
